Dass die Apple-Produkte seit 24 Jahren meine erste Wahl sind, habe ich hier schon diverse Male ausgebreitet. Auch, dass ich bei der Präsentation des ersten iPhones (2007) sehr interessiert daran war. Nur… gekauft habe ich dann doch keines, weil ich ein Zehn-Finger-Tipper bin und mir nicht vorstellen konnte oder auch wollte, auf Glas zu werkeln. Das Gefühl, etwas zu verpassen, kam einfach nicht auf.
Mit den Produkten, die meinen Vorstellungen von einer sinnvollen Bedienung eines handkleinen Gerätes entsprachen, begann dann mein Interesse an Smartphones. Das waren zuerest ein Blackberry Q10, dann das schwarze Blackberry Passport und dann das Passport SE, das heute mein uneingeschränkter Favorit ist. Ja .. und dann tatsächlich noch ein iPhone SE (1.Gen.), das größenmäßig meinem kleinen Q10 nahekam.
Alles schön und gut … Dass man als Blackberry-Nutzer schon belächelt wird, ist mehr als skurril. Es ist die Ironie des so vermeintlichen Fortschritts, dass arbeitstaugliche Geräte ohne ‚Hahahihi‘– Effekt nach und nach verschwinden werden. Wie sagte Jobs 2007: ‚Who needs a Stylus?‘ und verwies auf die Finger. Menschen haben aber gerne und sinnvollerweise Werkzeuge in der Hand, um damit etwas zu bewirken. Die nicht zu leugnende Erkenntnis führte in der ‚Nach-Jobs-Ära‘ dazu, dass es heutzutage den (teuren) Apple-Pencil gibt. As time goes by…
Der Firma Blackberry trauere ich keine Träne nach. Miserabler kann man kaum Kunden behandeln. Da wurden teure Geräte beworben und gekauft und dann? Ja, dann wurden die Kunden im Regen stehen gelassen, als sei das normal. Versprochene Updates kamen nicht mehr (bis heute für das BB10) und auch treue Kunden fühlten sich – regelrecht verarscht. Das war und ist nicht nur ein Gefühl. Das hat seine Parallelen mit dem Apple Newton PDA. Doch das war noch krasser!
Nichts gegen die iPhones – aber bis ca. 1600 € für ein Telefon, dessen ursprüngliche Funktion nur noch ein beiläufiges ‚Grundfeature‘ ist, ist für mich nicht diskutabel. Selbst ein iPhone SE 2 mit knapp 500 € in der Grundkonfiguration ist eine ‚ordentliche‘ Investition. Ähnlich teure Android-Geräte thematisiere ich hier gar nicht, weil mich die Plattform nicht interessiert und ich die nicht beurteilen kann und will. Das soll keine Diskriminierung sein. Ansichtssache eben… Das Folgende ist allerdings allgemeingültig:
Warum dieser Text? Das kann ich schnell auf den Punkt bringen: Liebe Zeitgenossen|innen; ist es denn zuviel verlangt, vor dem Kauf eines neuen Gerätes kurz oder etwas ausführlicher an den Zustand dieses, unseres gemeinsamen Planeten zu denken, dessen Ressourcen wir unnötig in einer Weise ausbeuten und zur Neige bringen, indem wir weiterhin dem ‚Schneller-Höher-Weiter‘ anhängen und uns so verhalten, als seien sie schier endlos? Ist es aus der Sicht wirklich nötig, ein Smartphone (oder ein anderes Gerät) nach ein oder zwei Jahren durch ein hochgepriesenes Folgemodell zu ersetzen? Fortschritt ist zweifellos gut – doch… der lässt sich auch mit Nachhaltigkeit kombinieren. Brauche ich ein neues Gerät, das eine halbe oder ganze Sekunde schneller arbeitet und ich damit dem Mainstream gerecht werde – weil ich damit modern und innovativ dem auf den Leim gehe, was mir die Fassadenturnerei der Werbung regelrecht aufdrängt und suggeriert, dass ich das brauche?
Das soll Jede|Jeder für sich entscheiden, sich aber nicht dann beschweren, wenn erkannt wird, dass man ‚Tauben in der Luft‘ nachgesprungen ist und sich bei der Landung ‚weh getan‘ hat. Warum nicht Reparatur oder Aufrüstung der Hard- und auch Software? Das geht natürlich hardwaremäßig nur, wenn Geräte anwenderfreundlich konstruiert und gefertigt werden. Keine verklebten Akkus und keine Schrauben, für die es keine Dreher gibt. Es ist doch akzeptabel, wenn ein Smartphone einen Millimeter dicker ist und z.B. der Akku einfach getauscht und gewechselt werden kann. Wäre das ein Rückschritt? Oder sogar ein Fortschritt? Ich denke – Letzteres.
Keiner… aber auch keiner überzeugt mich davon, dass ich meinen Verstand bei der Beurteilung des hier behandelten Themas dem ‚Zeitgeist‘ des fatalen Marketings unterwerfen sollte und das destruktive Profitdenken der Hersteller noch zu pudern. Die Designabteilungen und deren Instrukteure müssen umdenken. Fortschritt liegt in der Nachhaltigkeit und nicht in der Anwenderunfreundlichkeit der Produkte und deren Miniaturisierung auf Kosten des Gefühles, Geräte zu besitzen und zu bedienen, die immer weniger zugänglich und damit irreparabel sind.
Ein Gerät, das sich nicht öffnen lässt und|oder nicht (mit entsprechenden Kenntnissen oder Anleitungen) selber repariert werden kann, gehört dir nicht.

And now let’s get back to technique…
That Apple products have been my first choice for 24 years, I have spread out here several times. Also that I was very interested in them when I presented the first iPhone (2007). Just… I did not buy one because I am a ten-finger-tipper and could not imagine or did not want to work on glass. The feeling of missing something just didn’t come up.
My interest in smartphones began with products that met my ideas of how to use a small handheld device in a meaningful way. These were first a Blackberry Q10, then the black Blackberry Passport and then the Passport SE, which is my absolute favorite today. Yes … and then actually an iPhone SE (1st gen.), which in size was close to my little Q10.
All well and good… It’s more than just bizarre that people smile at you as a Blackberry user. It’s the irony of such supposed progress that workable devices without the ‚Hahahihi‘ effect will gradually disappear. As Jobs said in 2007: ‚Who needs a stylus?‘ and referred to the fingers. But people like to have tools in their hands to make a difference. This undeniable insight led to the (expensive) Apple pencil in the ‚post-Jobs era‘. As time goes by…
I don’t regret the Blackberry Company. It’s the worst way to treat customers. Expensive devices were advertised and bought and then? Yes, then customers were left out in the rain as if that was normal. Promised updates didn’t come anymore (until today for the BB10) and even loyal customers felt – downright fooled. That was and is not just a feeling. This has its parallels with the Apple Newton PDA. But that was even more blatant!
Nothing against the iPhones – but up to about 1600 € for a phone whose original function is only a casual ‚basic feature‘ is not debatable for me. Even an iPhone SE 2 with almost 500 € in the basic configuration is a ‚decent‘ investment. I won’t discuss similarly expensive Android devices here, because I’m not interested in the platform and I can’t and don’t want to judge it. This should not be a discrimination. It’s a matter of opinion… However, the following is generally valid:
Why this text? I can quickly get to the point: Dear Contemporaries; is it too much to ask before buying a new device to think briefly or in more detail about the state of this, our common planet, whose resources we are unnecessarily exploiting and running out by continuing to add to the ‚faster-upper-further‘ and behaving as if they were endless? Is it really necessary to replace a smartphone (or any other device) with a highly praised successor model after one or two years? Progress is certainly good – but… it can also be combined with sustainability. Do I need a new device that works half a second or even a second faster and that does justice to the mainstream – because I am using it in a modern and innovative way to address what the advertising façade gymnastics really forces on me and suggests that I need it?
Everyone should decide this for themselves, but should not complain if they realize that they have jumped after ‚pigeons in the air‘ and ‚hurt themselves‘ when landing. Why not repair or upgrade the hardware and software? Of course, in terms of hardware, this is only possible if devices are designed and manufactured in a user-friendly way. No stuck batteries and no screws for which there are no spinners. It is acceptable if a smartphone is one millimeter thicker and the battery can be easily replaced and exchanged. Would that be a step backwards? Or even progress? I think – the latter.
No one… but also nobody convinces me that I should subject my mind to the ‚Zeitgeist‘ of fatal marketing and to powder the destructive profit thinking of the manufacturers. The design departments and their instructors have to rethink. Progress lies in the sustainability and not in the user-friendliness of products and their miniaturisation at the expense of the feeling of owning and operating devices that are less and less accessible and therefore irreparable.
A device that cannot be opened and|or repaired by yourself (with appropriate knowledge or instructions) is not yours.
