Die intelligenteste Version von Smartphone-Hardware und Betriebssystem verschwindet: Quadatisch mit psysischer Tastatur. Das ist nichts für ‚Klicki-Bunti-Feature-Hipster. Doch: Wer schreibt schon gerne auf einer Glasplatte?
Der oder das Blackberry Passport war und ist weiterhin ein Sonderling der Extraklasse. Allerdings nichts für die vorher genannte 16:9 – Klientel weltweit, deren Schwerpunkt auf Konsum und nicht auf Produktivität zu liegen scheint – oder besser liegt. Immer wieder lege ich mein iPhone zur Seite und lasse mein Passport zum ‚Daily Driver‘ werden. Genau dann wird klar, mit welchem Klimbim man sich bei den aktuellen Smartphones beschäftigt. Wie lange hat es gedauert, bis ich eine für mich akzeptable Ordnerstruktur auf dem iPhone zustande brachte… will ich gar nicht mehr wissen. Beim Passport habe ich das Gefühl, es mit einem kleinen Desktop-Rechner zutun zu haben – mit der Vertrautheit einer entsprechenden Ordnerstruktur. Ich arbeite viel mit Tabellenkalkulationen, die auf dem breiten Passport-Screen bestens zur Geltung kommen. Texte (wie diesen) mit der psysischen, kapazitiven Tastatur zu schreiben, ist ein Vergnügen. Es gibt doch auf diesem Planeten sicherlich und zweifelsfrei genügend Menschen, die die Weiterentwicklung eines solchen Gerätes mit einem Kauf belohnen würden und damit einen echten Digitalen Assistenten ohne den aktuellen Firlefanz hätten. Für mich ist das BB-Passport trotz seines Alters ein echter PDA (Personal Digital Assistent), der die Bezeichnung auch verdient. Mich würde es nicht wundern, wenn das/der Blackberry Passport eines Tages im MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) erscheint – zurecht.

The Blackberry Passport was and still is a special device in a class of its own. However, nothing for the aforementioned 16:9 clientele worldwide, whose focus seems to be on consumption and not on productivity – or better. Every now and then, I put my iPhone aside and let my Passport become the ‚daily driver‘. It’s exactly then that it becomes clear what kind of clunky stuff you’re dealing with when it comes to current smartphones. How long did it take until I managed to create a folder structure on the iPhone that was acceptable to me… I don’t even want to know anymore. With the Passport, I feel like I’m dealing with a small desktop computer – with the familiarity of an appropriate folder structure. I work a lot with spreadsheets, which look great on the wide Passport screen. Writing texts (like this one) with the psysical, capacitive keyboard is a pleasure. There are surely and without a doubt enough people on this planet who would reward the further development of such a device with a purchase and thus have a real digital assistant without the current frippery. For me, despite its age, the BB Passport is a real PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) that also deserves the designation. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Blackberry Passport appears in the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) one day – and rightly so.
