In Ergänzung zu meinem vorherigen Beitrag (Mahmoud Rasho † , ein jesidischer Humanist…) poste ich hier den Link zum Dokumentarfilm ‚Sabaya‘ des Filmemachers Hogir Hirori , der seine Arbeit wie folgt kommentierte:: „Ich habe nicht damit gerechnet, dass ich das überlebe“ :

Hiroris immersiver Filmstil zeigt einen seltenen Einblick in das berüchrigste Internierungslageer Al-Hol in Syrien, in dem ca. 73.000 Menschen aus vielen Ländern (ca.58) leben. Familien und mutmaßliche Unterstützer von IS-Kämpfern sowie jesidische Frauen und Mädchen. Letztere als Zwangsprostituierte. Sabaya (Sklavinnen) ist die kurdische Bezeichnung dafür..

Der Film eröffnete das Human Right Festival Berlin vom 16.-25. September 2021, das online und mit Vor-Ort-Veranstaltungen stattfand. Er gewann unter anderem den World Documentary Directing Award 2021 des Sundance-Filmfestival in den USA und wurde bereits auf 30 internationalen Festivals gezeigt.

Hogir Hirori: „Sabaya ist der letzte Teil einer Trilogie von Filmen, die ich seit 2014 gedreht habe, um die Folgen des Krieges zu dokumentieren – zuerst The Girl Who Saved My Life, dann The Deminer und nun Sabaya. Seit 2014 habe ich mich gefragt, was mit den Frauen und Mädchen passiert, die vom “Islamischen Staat” entführt wurden. Also beschloss ich, in den Nordosten Syriens zu reisen, um dort mehr herauszufinden. Hier habe ich die Freiwilligen im Yazidi Home Center kennengelernt.“me Center.“

Bei den Dreharbeiten brachte er sich selbst in Lebensgefahr. Hirori: „…und um die Welt daran zu erinnern, dass Hass niemals die Lösung ist und dass wir einander mit mehr Liebe und Respekt begegnen müssen – unabhängig von kulturellem Hintergrund, Religion oder Geschlecht.“

In addition to my previous post (Mahmoud Rasho † , a Yazidi humanist…) I am posting here the link to the documentary film ‚Sabaya‘ by filmmaker Hogir Hirori , who commented on his work as follows: „I didn’t expect to survive this“ :

Hirori’s immersive film style shows a rare glimpse into the most notorious internment site Al-Hol in Syria, home to about 73,000 people from many countries (approx.58). Families and suspected supporters of IS fighters as well as Yazidi women and girls. The latter as forced prostitutes. Sabaya (slave girls) is the Kurdish term for this….

The film opened the Human Right Festival Berlin, September 16-25, 2021, which took place online and with on-site events. It won, among others, the World Documentary Directing Award 2021 of the Sundance Film Festival in the USA and has already been screened at 30 international festivals.

Hogir Hirori: „Sabaya is the last part of a trilogy of films I have made since 2014 to document the consequences of war – first The Girl Who Saved My Life, then The Deminer and now Sabaya. Since 2014, I’ve wondered what happens to the women and girls who have been kidnapped by the „Islamic State.“ So I decided to travel to northeastern Syria to find out more. This is where I met the volunteers at the Yazidi Home Center.“

During the filming, he put himself in mortal danger. He said, „I wanted to make this documentary so no one could say I didn’t know about it or never heard about it.“ And further, „If individual activists equipped only with a cell phone with a poor connection can accomplish so much, then a large organization can do much more.“

Mahmoud Rasho † was a volunteer of Yazidi Home Center (local NGO).

Hirori: „…and to remind the world that hate is never the solution and that we need to treat each other with more love and respect – regardless of cultural background, religion or gender.“

Die Terrormiliz IS hält immer noch jesidische Frauen als Sklavinnen gefangen. Mahmoud Rasho hatte es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, sie zu finden und zu befreien. Selbstlos und unter Lebensgefahr. Er stand im Visier der Terroristen, die 2014 die nordirakische Provinz Sindschar überrannte und an den Jesiden einen Völkermord beging.

Nun ist er vierzigjährig verstorben; dem Vernehmen nach an einem Herzinfarkt.

Mit einigen in Deutschland lebenden Verwandten bin ich befreundet und kann ihre Trauer um diesen mutigen und selbstlosen Menschenrechts-Aktivisten sehr gut nachvollziehen.

Mahmoud Rasho war ein humanitärer Helfer für Frauen, die unsägliches Leid als Sklavinnen der IS-Terroristen erleiden mussten und müssen. Das zu ändern, diese Menschen zu befreien, wurde seine Lebensaufgabe. Deswegen blieb er in seinem Dorf in der Nähe der Stadt Hasaka/Syrien.

Wenn solche Menschen gehen, dann wird mehr als deutlich, dass die Gründe ihres Handelns tief in ihnen verwurzelt waren und nicht nur einfach beispielhaft sind, sondern altruistisch.

The terrorist militia IS still holds Yazidi women captive as slaves. Mahmoud Rasho had made it his mission to find and free them. Selflessly and at the risk of his life. He was targeted by the terrorists who overran the northern Iraqi province of Sinjar in 2014 and committed genocide against the Yazidis.

Now he has died at the age of forty; reportedly of a heart attack.

The newspaper ‚Welt‘ wrote an article about him and MTV shot a corresponding documentary film.

I am friends with some relatives living in Germany and can very well understand their grief for this courageous and selfless human rights activist.

Mahmoud Rasho was a humanitarian helper for women who had to and still have to suffer unspeakable suffering as slaves of the IS terrorists. To change this, to free these people, became his life’s mission. That is why he stayed in his village near the city of Hasaka/Syria.

When such people leave, it becomes abundantly clear that the reasons for their actions were deeply rooted in them and are not simply exemplary, but altruistic.

An diesem 01. November jährt sich der Fluchttag meiner Eltern im Jahre 1953 mit uns drei Kindern aus der damaligen ‚Sowjetischen Besatzungszone (SBZ, später DDR)‘ per Bahn. Von mir gibt es keine Erinnerung daran. Mein Gedächtnis setzte schlagartig ein, als wir am Zielort bei Verwandten ankamen und ich die Schwester meiner Großmutter sah und in ihr meine einige Monate zuvor verstorbene -und offensichtlich hochgradig geliebte- Großmutter wiederzuerkennen glaubte. Ich kann mich sogar noch an meinen ersten, selber wahrgenommenen Satz erinnern: „Meine Oma ist aus dem Himmel gekommen…“ Das ist mir heute noch sehr präsent. Ich war drei Jahre alt …

Die Verwandten hatten ihr großes Wohnzimmer für uns Fünf hergerichtet und sich einige Monate mit den verbliebenen Zimmern begnügt. Eine ungewöhnliche Geste, die immer noch nicht hoch genug bewertet werden kann. Es folgte der ‚Neustart‘ meiner Eltern in Freiheit und Frieden und kräftiger, allseitiger Unterstützung.

Flucht… was für ein Wort. Wenn Erwachsene mit ihren kleinen Kindern aus ihrer angestammten Umgebung das Risiko einer Flucht ins Unbekannte wagen, dann dürfen da keine ‚Steine im Weg‘ liegen. Die absolut beispielhafte Unterstützung, die wir erfahren durften, war wohl acht Jahre nach dem 2.Weltkrieg wahrscheinlicher als später oder heute.

Das alles geht mir durch den Kopf, wenn ich die Flüchtlingsströme Richtung Europa sehe. Jeder Mensch, erwachsen, jugendlich oder Kind, ist ein Schicksal … ein Opfer mit grober Zielrichtung. Wer räumt schon sein Wohnzimmer aus und lässt darin monatelang Flüchtlinge wohnen? Sofern Flüchtlinge -sogenannte Illegale- überhaupt einen Zielstaat erreichen und nicht an Grenzen abgewiesen oder ‚weggebissen‘ werden. Kein Mensch auf diesem Planeten ist illegal!

Gerechtfertigt ist das Abweisen von Kriminellen und sog. Staatsfeinden – also Menschen, die jeder Gesellschaft durch Unterwanderung schaden. Ein Staat hat das Recht und auch die Pflicht, seine Bürger zu schützen und Schaden abzuwenden. Das vereinbare ich mit meiner pazifistischen Sicht.

Jede und Jeder dieses Lesende mag hier zustimmen – oder auch nicht. Die Erinnerungen des kleinen Flüchtlingsjungen in den 50er Jahren sind noch sehr wach und … ich hätte auch einer von den ‚Weggebissenen‘ sein können, wenn es nicht Menschen gegeben hätte, für die Hilfe und Menschlichkeit selbstverständlich waren.

This 01 November is the anniversary of the escape of my parents in 1953 with us three children from the then ‚Soviet Occupation Zone (SBZ, later GDR)‘ by train. There is no memory of it from me. My memory suddenly kicked in when we arrived at our destination with relatives and I saw my grandmother’s sister and thought I recognized in her my grandmother who had died a few months earlier – and was obviously highly loved. I can even remember my first, self-perceived phrase: „My grandma came from heaven…“ This is still very present to me today. I was three years old …

The relatives had prepared their large living room for the five of us and made do with the remaining rooms for a few months. An unusual gesture, which still cannot be valued highly enough. This was followed by the ’new start‘ of my parents in freedom and peace and strong, all-round support.

Escape… what a word. When adults dare to take the risk of fleeing into the unknown with their small children from their traditional environment, then there must be no ’stones in the way‘. The absolutely exemplary support that we were allowed to experience was probably more likely eight years after the Second World War than later or today.

All this goes through my mind when I see the flow of refugees towards Europe. Every human being, adult, youth or child, is a destiny …. a victim with a rough destination. Who would clear out their living room and let refugees live in it for months? Provided that refugees -so-called illegal- reach a destination country at all and are not turned away at borders or ‚bitten away‘. No human being on this planet is illegal!

It is justified to turn away criminals and so-called enemies of the state – people who harm any society by infiltrating it. A state has the right and also the duty to protect its citizens and to avert harm. I reconcile this with my pacifist view.

Each and everyone of this reading may agree here – or not. The memories of the little refugee boy in the 50s are still very much alive and … I could also have been one of the ‚bitten away‘, if there had not been people for whom help and humanity were self-evident.
