The Great Gig in the Sky (Der große Auftritt im Himmel), ein Stück des Albums ‚The Dark Side of the Moon‘ der Rockband Pink Floyd, war seinerzeit und noch darüber hinaus nicht der von mir favorisierte Teil des Albums. Es zieht sich lang hin und ist bis auf den Anfang und das Ende ohne Text. Getragen wird das Stück von der Sängerin und Mitautorin Clare Torry. Ihr Stimmumfang ist unglaublich. Ich habe recht lange gebraucht, den Zugang dazu zu finden.

Der Text am Anfang des Stückes :  “And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do; I don’t mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There’s no reason for it — you’ve gotta go sometime.”  (auf deutsch: „Und ich habe keine Angst vorm Sterben. Jederzeit ist recht, es ist mir egal. Warum sollte ich mich vorm Sterben fürchten? Es gibt keinen Grund dafür – irgendwann musst du ja gehen“). Hinzu kommt der Klavierteil Richard Wrights.

Der Text am Ende des Stückes: “I never said I was frightened of dying.” („Ich habe nie gesagt, dass ich Angst vorm Sterben habe.“ Hinzu kommt der Klavierteil Richard Wrights.

Keine Frage – hier geht es um den Tod. Die gesamte Darbietung erscheint euphemistisch wie das ‚Pfeifen im Walde‘. Eine Entmystifizierung? Bei dem ’schwersten aller Themen‘ kann keine Entzauberung oder simple Verharmlosung gelingen – es ist das finale physische Komplettdesaster. Nur – wenn das alles nichts am Faktum ändert, dann ist der Umgang mit der Angst davor also ein lupenreines Gefühlsgewitter, dessen Intensität in eine ausweglose Akzeptanz führen sollte, sofern man nicht verzweifeln will. Letztlich wird deutlich, dass Menschen doch ‚Etwas‘ unterlegen sind, von dem sie nicht den Ansatz einer -wie auch immer- Vorstellung haben … Religionen und Philosophien zum Trotze.

The Great Gig in the Sky, a track from the album ‚The Dark Side of the Moon‘ by the rock band Pink Floyd, was not my favorite part of the album at the time and even beyond. It goes on for a long time and is without lyrics except for the beginning and the end. The piece is carried by singer and co-writer Clare Torry. Her vocal range is incredible. It took me quite a long time to find access to it.

No question – this is about death. The whole performance seems euphemistic like ‚whistling in the woods‘. A demystification? With the ‚heaviest topic of all‘ no demystification or simple trivialization can succeed – it is the final physical complete disaster. Only – if all this does not change the fact, then dealing with the fear of it is thus a flawless emotional storm, the intensity of which should lead to a hopeless acceptance, unless one wants to despair. In the end it becomes clear that people are nevertheless subject to ’something‘ of which they do not have the rudiment of a -however- idea … Religions and philosophies notwithstanding.
